More than half of the white lines painted on UK |roads are barely visible and are creating deadly driving conditions, according to a survey.
Roads such as the M1, M6, M18 and A525 have all been labelled as having almost non-existent white lines, according to the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA).
In a spot check 50.6% of road markings in England, Wales and Scotland are in a similar non-existent position.
The proportion of roads falling into the emergency repairs bracket is 23%, while fewer than 7% score the highest rating of ‘optimum’.
RSMA national director George Lee said: “These findings are shocking. We could see a clear, direct correlation between deadly roads and deadly road markings when we examined the 10 most dangerous roads identified by the Road Safety Foundation.”
According to a report from the Asphalt Industry Alliance the UK is facing a pothole pandemic. The organisation revealed that 1.7 million potholes were filled in over the past 12 months, costing £90 million.
